Geelong West resident and former teacher Rosemary Nugent, felt privileged to accompany First Lady Dr Kirsty Sword Gusmão AO and nine others on a Study Tour to Timor-Leste in August 2019. There were many opportunities to witness the important role played by women in their community, including those associated with the Alola Foundation. In addition, there were celebrations to acknowledge a very significant historical milestone, the 20th anniversary of the vote for independence held on 30 August 1999. As a member of AETA (Australia East Timor Association) Geelong branch and an inaugural member of the Geelong Friends of Viqueque, this was an important trip for Rosemary to enrich her understanding of this near neighbour and to continue her advocacy for, and friendship with, the Timorese…
